MultiChoice announces DStv price changes
MultiChoice South Africa, the country’s leading video entertainment provider, has announced its annual price and product adjustments for DStv and Showmax.
MultiChoice SA chief executive Byron Du Plessis said the latest price changes recognised the financial pressures faced by South African households.
“MultiChoice has implemented considered adjustments, focusing on enhancing value across its packages,” he said.
The company said it continues to refine its DStv channel lineup to bring subscribers the most in-demand entertainment.
The content includes all major local and global sporting events, the latest movies, and local series.
“We continue to invest in securing the rights to the best content, ensuring subscribers enjoy premium viewing experiences and exclusive access to the shows and events,” it said.
Many of the company’s products, including all DStv Stream packages, Box Office movies, and Showmax, did not see price increases.
DStv’s Add Movies premium movie bolt-on’s pricing will be reduced to R49 per month, a 38% price reduction.
DStv Premium, Compact Plus, and Compact subscribers will get an additional concurrent stream on any device.
This additional stream will allow customers to enjoy DStv’s entertainment offering on more devices and in more environments.
Compact customers will also get five new channels, including the SuperSport Action channel and four new general entertainment offerings.
“Compact customers can look forward to the new season of Shaka Ilembe, which will be the Group’s biggest ever local production,” MultiChoice said.
Three new channels will be added for the DStv Family package and two new channels for DStv Access customers.
MultiChoice added that DStv customers will continue to enjoy discounts on their Showmax subscriptions.
Premium customers will still receive Showmax for free, while DStv Access, Family, Compact, and Compact Plus customers will receive a 40% discount.
MultiChoice explained that the recently announced 0.5 percentage point value-added tax (VAT) increase on 1 May 2025 may further affect its DStv prices.
“Pricing will need to be adjusted for this higher VAT rate effective 1 May. We will communicate the impact of this VAT increase pricing during April 2025,” it said.
MultiChoice encouraged its customers to take advantage of the price lock deals to ensure lower prices over the contract period.
It highlighted that a 24-month price lock contract, available until 31 March 2025 at R899 per month, saves a customer R2,400 over two years.
“MultiChoice continues to reassess its pricing and packaging structures, considering what customers want and the economics of the local business,” the company said.
