South Africa

Five countries where the rand will take you far

Although travelling can be expensive, there are several popular tourist destinations where the rand will take South Africans a long way.

South Africa is a prime destination for foreign travellers. Because of the country’s low exchange rate, travellers can enjoy high-end restaurants, which they may not have been able to afford in other countries.

“A night out at a fancy restaurant is a rare treat if you’re paying in rands – but in US dollars, an American tourist can enjoy a fine-dining meal in South Africa for the price of a burger combo in the United States,” Nedbank said.

Compared to prices in dollars, pounds or euros, South Africa offers an excellent deal for tourists worldwide. Unfortunately, this also means that South Africans often find international travel so expensive.

South African tourists typically need to pay for the trip and carry spending money in currencies that are significantly stronger than the rand.

For example, according to Wise.com, an average cappuccino in France – a popular tourist destination – costs around R83.66, while a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs an average of R358.76.

Earth Trekkers found that the average cost of travelling in Europe and Australia per person is $125 (around R2,200) per day. For a family of four, the average daily cost was $350 (approximately R6,250) in these countries.

For a week, that comes out to R15,400 for a solo traveller and R43,750 for a family of four. While there are more and less expensive ways to travel, this is not affordable for many South Africans.

“But that doesn’t mean you can’t afford to travel the world,” Nedbank said. “There are a few countries where the rand is stronger than the local currency, making international travel more affordable. You just need to know where to go.”

With that in mind, Nedbank outlined five popular travel destinations with a good exchange rate for South African travellers.

Thailand

“Thailand is a popular travel spot for South Africans,” Nedbank said. “The country is rich in history and diverse cultures while still offering vibrant nightlife (try Khaosan Road, Bangkok and Bangla Road, Phuket).”

“Its main attractions are soft, sandy beaches (another Phuket speciality), sunny weather, and island hopping,” the bank added.

“It’s a feast for the eyes and the tummy, with culinary influences that blend Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Central Asian flavours.”

Mauritius

Nedbank explained that Mauritius is an excellent option for a remote island vacation that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

“As a South African citizen, you will need a travel visa to enter the country, but this is free, which is another plus when looking for a cheaper holiday.”

“You’ll find plenty of all-inclusive holiday packages that include flights, accommodation, and meals, to stretch your rand even further.”

India

“If you’re keen to discover one of the world’s oldest civilisations, now a vibrant modern powerhouse, you’ll be glad to know that a visit to India won’t break the bank.”

“India is renowned for its spices in a variety of dishes, from fiery biryanis and creamy kormas to sweet mango lassies.” the bank said.

Fortunately for food lovers, street food is incredibly affordable. However, there are also plenty of other attractions that make this an appealing destination.

“Whether your heart longs for the tranquillity of the Himalayas or the party beaches of Goa, India has something for everyone.”

Tanzania

“Relax on the white sands of tropical beaches, sample multiple cultures and rich foods packed with exotic spices, or get a close-up view of jaw-dropping herds of wildlife on their great annual migration across the Serengeti.”

Nedbank urged visitors to see Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. However, they should also be aware that climbing the mountain will involve much more expense and planning with a reputable, experienced tour operator.

They explained that it is not something travellers can slot into a quick, cheap getaway.
