South Africa’s most valuable football clubs
The most valuable club in the DStv Premiership is Mamelodi Sundowns, with a value north of R500 million, followed by Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Cape Town City FC, and Sekhukhune United.
This is from Statista’s analysis of the market value of soccer clubs in the DStv Premiership for the 2022/23 season.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) was established in 1996, with Manning Rangers winning the first edition of the PSL in 1997.
From 1998 to 2000, the league was dominated by Mamelodi Sundowns, who pulled off a hat-trick of titles.
In 2001, Orlando Pirates secured the title. The league was reduced from 18 to 16 teams after the end of 2001/2002, causing two teams, Ria Stars and Free State Stars, to be disbanded.
Kaizer Chiefs successfully defended their league title in 2005 after they won the prestigious trophy in 2004 for the first time in a decade.
The 2005/2006 season saw Mamelodi Sundowns capturing the title for the fourth time.
Sundowns have dominated the competition, winning twelve titles since its inception and the last five in a row. Pirates and Chiefs have won four-a-piece, with SuperSport United winning three.
Manning Rangers, Santos, and Wits have each won the competition once.
The PSL has helped raise the standard of club soccer in South Africa, providing the sport with better media coverage and much-improved revenue through sponsorship deals.
This has resulted in a marked increase in the value of soccer clubs in South Africa, with the market value of all the teams in the DStv premiership being R3.16 billion in 2023.
Patrice Motsepe-owned Sundowns represent 17% of this value. Sundowns have increased in value by over R150 million in the last year from R382 million at the end of the 2021/2022 season.
Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs have seen more muted growth of less than R50 million from last season.
