4 new coins for South Africa in 2026

The South African Reserve Bank introduced four new coins in 2026 to commemorate historical milestones in the country.

These new coins are part of the Milestones of Freedom campaign, which President Cyril Ramaphosa launched on 18 June 2026.

“The programme commemorates key milestones in South Africa’s democratic journey, while also strengthening service delivery and promoting social cohesion,” he said.

He highlighted many milestones in South Africa’s democratic journey, including the 30th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption.

He also pointed to the 50th anniversary of the 1976 youth uprisings and the 70th anniversary of the anti-pass campaign.

“These landmark events reflect the long struggle for democracy and freedom, while also underscoring the journey toward a more inclusive and equitable society,” he said.

“The campaign further signals the government’s commitment to building on democratic gains and accelerating service delivery to communities.”

The new R2 coins launched by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) as part of the Milestones of Freedom programme are:

  • The 125th Graduation Anniversary of Charlotte Maxeke R2 coin, honouring her 1901 graduation from Wilberforce University in the United States.
  • The 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March R2 coin, commemorating the march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest pass laws.
  • The 50th Anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising R2 coin, honouring the legacy and impact of the Soweto youth uprising.
  • The 30th Anniversary of the Constitution of South Africa R2 coin, recognising three decades since the adoption and signing of the 1996 Constitution.

These commemorative circulation coins were released into general circulation between June 2026 and August 2026.

Commemorative circulation coins are regular money with special designs that honour important historical events, famous people, or major anniversaries.

They are meant to pass freely through everyday transactions, including at the till and in taxis, rather than be held as collector sets.

At the August 2026 launch, SARB Governor Lesetja Kganyago said that two of the R2 coins are the first commemorative circulation coins to feature women.

He added that the coins serve to correct a long-standing historical imbalance in national memory where women’s contributions have often been overlooked.

Kganyago explained that the launch forms part of a broader freedom program by the South African Reserve Bank.

In June 2026, the central bank released a R2 coin commemorating the 1976 Soweto youth uprising.

“Let me remind members of the public that these coins remain ordinary tender at their face value, however beautiful they may be,” Kganyago said.

“They belong in circulation to be passed from one person to another to pass the story of those great women. Keep the coins circulating.”

Minister in the Presidency responsible for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, said these coins are a significant moment in the country’s history.

“For generations, women stood at the forefront of resistance, organised communities, and sustained families during periods of oppression,” she said.

“They have made immeasurable contributions to the liberation struggle. Yet, their contributions have too often been overlooked.”

“Today, South Africa affirms that our national story cannot be told without recognising the central role played by women.”

Chikunga highlighted that Charlotte Maxeke shattered expectations and expanded possibilities for generations of women to follow.

“Her achievement was a declaration that black women were entitled to knowledge, dignity, leadership and equal participation in society,” she said.

“Maxeke understood the transformative power of education, saying it equips citizens to challenge injustice, participate meaningfully in the economy, and unlock opportunities.”
