Tiny coastal town gets one of the largest estates of its kind in South Africa

A new residential estate has been launched within one of South Africa’s largest mixed-use developments, adding another housing option to the growing Renishaw Coastal Precinct on KwaZulu-Natal’s Mid-South Coast.

Restilridge Farm Estate is the latest residential offering within the 1,300-hectare Renishaw Coastal Precinct in Scottburgh, following the successful rollout of Renishaw Hills, where six phases have already sold out.

According to Renishaw Property Developments, the new estate is aimed at buyers seeking a secure coastal lifestyle that blends rural character with modern amenities.

Speaking at the launch, Renishaw Property Developments managing director Barto van der Merwe said the project builds on the area’s agricultural heritage.

“This land forms part of the history of Crookes Brothers Limited, a business that has farmed and contributed to this area for generations. That legacy comes with responsibility.”

He said they wanted to create something that respects the farm’s history, strengthens the surrounding area, and adds lasting value.

“To us, our measure of success will be whether future generations will look back at Restilridge Farm Estate and see it as an enhancement to this landscape, rather than something that detracted from it.”

Van der Merwe said there is growing demand for residential estates that offer both lifestyle benefits and long-term investment potential.

“Restilridge has been designed to answer that demand in a truly unique way. Residents will enjoy the tranquillity of a coastal farming lifestyle while remaining close to essential amenities, schools, retail centres, and transport routes.”

“It’s a concept unlike anything currently available on the South Coast, and we anticipate significant interest once launched.”

A mix of heritage and modern homes

The development will consist of 97 homes across three residential offerings. These include 32 restored Pioneer Homes, originally built as Crookes Brothers farm residences.

These properties will be refurbished while retaining their historic Natal wraparound-veranda architecture. The estate will also include 35 freehold Homestead Collection homes designed in a contemporary farm style.

In addition, the estate will house 30 sectional title homes known as The Paddocks for buyers seeking a lower-maintenance, lock-up-and-go option.

The development has been designed around conservation principles, with homes intended to blend into the surrounding landscape while preserving the area’s rural character.

Residents will also receive municipal-style services through RenSERV, including potable water, sanitation, waste management, road maintenance and solar capability.

The estate will include a clubhouse, swimming pool, pickleball courts, yoga and Pilates facilities, children’s play areas, open-air markets, a restaurant, and more than 40km of walking, running and mountain biking trails.

An equestrian centre with stables, paddocks, arenas and cross-country courses also forms part of the development.

Other features include a fully fenced, secure estate, SANS-compliant water treatment systems, sustainable building materials, and heritage-inspired architecture.

The estate will also feature solar design principles and a “Black Sky” policy that eliminates street lighting to preserve night skies.

The Renishaw Coastal Precinct

Restilridge Farm Estate forms part of the wider Renishaw Coastal Precinct, which is planned as a mixed-use development.

It will incorporate residential neighbourhoods, retail, commercial space, schools, healthcare facilities and light industrial opportunities.

Approximately 80% of the precinct has been set aside for conservation, making it one of the country’s largest environmentally focused mixed-use developments.

Future infrastructure planned for the precinct includes a shopping centre, filling station, convenience retail, healthcare and wellness facilities, and a private school catering for learners from primary through high school.

The broader development is intended to accommodate multigenerational residential living alongside commercial and community facilities.

Renishaw Property Developments believes the continued demand for secure lifestyle estates on the KZN Mid-South Coast is being supported by semigration and competitive property prices.

The area’s lifestyle attractions, including Blue Flag beaches, golf courses, nature reserves and dive sites, also appeal to buyers.

Van der Merwe said buyers are increasingly looking beyond a home’s size when making purchasing decisions.

“People are increasingly looking for homes that offer more than just square metre value. They want security, wellness, sustainability, and genuine community living.”

“Restilridge has been carefully designed around those priorities while still offering excellent growth potential.”
