Five countries where the rand will take you far

While travelling can be expensive, visiting countries with weaker currencies can help you get more bang for your buck.

This is according to Nedbank, which explained that South Africans can make the most out of their travels by visiting the right countries.

Many tourists from Europe or America think of South Africa as an excellent, affordable travel destination.

This is because South Africa’s weaker exchange rate allows them to enjoy experiences that would rack up a fortune back home or in other countries.

For example, Nedbank compared the price of a cheeseburger with chips from Spur in South Africa to TGI Fridays in the US, which targets a similar market, on Uber Eats.

At TGI Fridays, a cheeseburger with chips can cost over $15 (approximately R288), whereas a cheeseburger with chips and onion rings costs R150.90 at Spur.

“So, compared to the prices in dollars, pounds or euros, South Africa offers a great deal for tourists. Those currencies are all stronger than ours, so they buy much more in South Africa than they would in their own countries,” the bank explained.

“That’s also why South Africans often find international travel so expensive – we usually have to pay for the trip and take along spending money in currencies much stronger than the rand.”

However, that does not mean that South Africans can’t afford to travel the world, Nedbank said.

“There are a few countries where the rand is stronger than the local currency, which makes international travel more affordable. You just need to know where to go.”

However, the bank also cautioned that prospective travellers should do their research to make sure they get the full picture.

“It’s tempting to book a flight to any country where the rand seems stronger, but always do your research – especially on the average prices at your destination.”

“If a country’s currency is half the value of the rand, but you end up spending 3 times as much on meals, coffee, or a night out, you’re not really saving. You need to compare the cost of living as well as the currency of the country you’re visiting.”

With that in mind, Nedbank outlined five popular travel options with a good exchange rate for South African travellers.

Thailand

Nedbank explained that Thailand is a popular travel stop for South Africans, saying the country is rich in history and diverse cultures while still offering a vibrant nightlife.

The country’s main attractions are clear beaches, sunny weather, and island hopping.
