Track the 2026 local government election results online

Newsday’s election portal makes it easy for South Africans to track the 2026 local government elections in real time.

The 2026 Local Government Elections commenced across the country with special voting on Monday, 2 November, and Tuesday, 3 November 2026.

The main voting will take place on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, and is set to be a hotly contested affair in metropolitan areas.

Awongiwe Booi, a fixed income analyst at Investec Wealth & Investment International, shed light on what to expect.

She said that South Africa is moving into a multiparty era. The ANC remains the largest party, but its support has weakened to 40.2% in the 2024 national election.

Voter turnout further complicates the picture. More than 29 million people are registered for the 2026 poll, but it’s unclear how many will vote.

This makes mobilisation, rather than registration, one of the biggest success factors in a party gaining votes.

Coalition negotiations also matter. A party can win the most votes and still be unable to form a workable majority.

Conversely, a smaller party can gain influence beyond its vote share by deciding who becomes mayor and who controls the budget.

South Africa’s eight metros house around 40% of the population and carry an outsized share of economic activity, employment and infrastructure.

They are where failures in water, electricity, roads and billing become consequential to households and businesses.

As such, overall business and consumer confidence in South Africa will be driven by municipal performance in the major metros.
