The South Africans who easily find jobs
In South Africa’s competitive job market, individuals with certain specialist skills face far less competition and stronger employment prospects in 2026.
South African online recruitment platform Pnet has released its Job Market Trends Report for December 2025, which includes the Pnet Job Guide for 2026.
The analysis revealed fierce competition for jobs with low barriers to entry in terms of experience and qualifications. It also found that there is a healthy demand for skills in sectors such as Healthcare, Finance, and Information Technology.
Over the past year, Pnet analysed thousands of job listings across the South African recruitment market.
The focus was on identifying consistent, sustainable demand across roles that offer lasting employment opportunities within the local job market rather than considering short-term or speculative trends.
Pnet explained that their findings point to strong and ongoing hiring activity across 12 key job sectors. Each job sector presents certain roles that consistently show plenty of employment opportunities.
To understand how accessible each job role is, Pnet considered four criteria. First, the platform considered job availability.
This indicates the frequency of job opportunities becoming available for the specific job role. Pnet’s Job Guide provides a three-point scale on job availability – low, medium or high.
If, for example, there are two jobs a month which fit a certain job role, it may be classified as low compared to another job role which sees 250 opportunities every month.
The second criterion Pnet looked at was talent pool size/ competition. This indicates the number of job seekers competing for the same job.
They again used a three-point scale to offer some insights into job roles that have low, medium, or high competition.
Naturally, jobs with low competition indicate a better chance of getting the role than jobs with high competition.
Experience and education

Third, Pnet considered the experience level. The experience level ranges from low to medium and high. This indicator implies how much work experience one typically needs to secure a specific role.
Given one has the right skill set, a ‘low experience level’ usually indicates that this job role is easily accessible without having to have worked in the role for many years.
A high experience level, on the other hand, indicates that a job requires a substantial amount of work experience and expertise from years of working in a similar role.
Finally, Pnet looked at the education level. This criterion asks whether the role typically requires years of education and university degrees, or only a matric certificate. The job education level ranges from low to medium and high.
While a low education level represents a matric certificate or some schooling background, a high education level marks job roles which require tertiary qualifications like an honours, master’s or general university degree.
Job roles with medium education levels are typically jobs which require a professional certification or a diploma.
Pnet’s results showed that high levels of competition and low availability for jobs that require lower levels of experience and education.
This trend is especially affecting certain roles in Administration, Manufacturing, Logistics, Sales and Finance.
Conversely, demand for many specialist roles in Engineering, Finance and Information Technology appears set to continue outpacing availability of skills for the foreseeable future.
South Africa’s in-demand jobs

“As we step into 2026, many South Africans are looking ahead with cautious optimism, hoping for better opportunities, more stability and roles that offer real growth and reliable income,” said Pnet’s Head of Data, Anja Bates.
“Our data highlights where the opportunities lie for graduates and first-time job seekers beginning their careers, as well as for more experienced professionals who may be considering a career shift or a new role.”
The data, she explained, revealed just how intense the competition is across many operational and white collar roles.
This creates pressure for candidates to differentiate themselves even in roles where educational and experience requirements are lower.
“In this crowded job market, recruiters are searching for candidates based on skills, experience, and profile completeness,” Bates said.
“In 2026, success in the job market will depend not only on demand, but on how effectively candidates position themselves within it.”
Bates encouraged job seekers to maintain a well-organised job profile with an up-to-date work history, clearly listed skills, and visibility enabled for recruiters.
This will significantly improve their chances of being discovered for relevant roles and their ability to negotiate the best possible offers.
The table below assesses some common job roles with high availability, considering the typical experience and educational level required, as well as the level of competition for each new role that opens.
