New luxury hotel coming to South Africa’s Valley of the Chiefs
Umfolozi River Hotel is set to open in 2028 as Hilton’s latest expansion in South Africa, bringing a 102-room lifestyle hotel focused on cultural tourism and wildlife experiences to northern KwaZulu-Natal.
On 18 May 2026, Hilton announced the signing of Umfolozi River Hotel, KwaZulu-Natal, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, in partnership with Umfolozi Hotel and Spa.
Expected to open in 2028, the hotel marks the brand’s second Tapestry Collection signing in South Africa within the last year, demonstrating Hilton’s continued growth across key leisure destinations in the country.
The signing took place during Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban with representatives from Hilton, Umfolozi Hotel and Spa, and Valor Hospitality Partners.
Located in Mtubatuba in the Zulu cultural heartland, Umfolozi River Hotel will be rooted in a region known for its cultural significance and natural landscapes.
The area is home to landmarks such as the Valley of the Chiefs and local villages offering insights into traditional Zulu life, history and craftsmanship.
The hotel will also provide access to some of South Africa’s most renowned natural attractions.
This includes Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Game Reserve, approximately 30 minutes away, and iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognised for its diverse ecosystems.
Hilton’s senior vice president of development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Patrick Fitzgibbon, said they are pleased to partner with Umfolozi Hotel and Spa to continue expanding their lifestyle presence in South Africa.
“Northern KwaZulu-Natal’s rich cultural heritage and proximity to iconic wildlife and natural attractions make it a compelling location for Tapestry Collection by Hilton,” he said.
This is especially the case as guests are increasingly seeking distinctive, experience-led stays rooted in their surroundings.
“With 12 hotels trading and in the pipeline across the country, and plans to open more than 100 hotels in Africa, we remain focused on providing more ways to stay for our guests.”
Hilton is doing so by strengthening its portfolio and introducing more of its award-winning brands to key destinations across the continent, Fitzgibbon said.

These include an all-day dining restaurant, a lobby café and bar, a spa, a gym, a pool, as well as two meeting rooms and a ballroom for corporate events and social gatherings.
Set within the forests of KwaZulu-Natal, guests will enjoy an immersive, locally inspired stay, with community-driven experiences that connect guests to the destination’s culture and heritage.
Umfolozi Hotel and Spa’s executive chairman, Zakhele Mkhize, said their partnership with Hilton to open Umfolozi River Hotel, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, marks an important milestone for both the company and the wider region.
“The hotel will celebrate KwaZulu-Natal’s unique character while delivering the world-class hospitality standards Hilton is globally known for.”
“We look forward to creating a destination that offers meaningful cultural connection, natural beauty and a memorable guest experience.”
The property will be operated by Valor Hospitality Partners, a global leader in integrated hotel management and operations solutions, and one of Hilton’s trusted hospitality partners.
Valor co-founder and managing partner AMEA, Tony Romer-Lee, said the signing of The Umfolozi River Hotel is a testament to the continued growth and sophistication of the hospitality sector in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We are thrilled to partner with Mr Mkhize and Hilton to bring this unique brand to South Africa. This project goes beyond design and delivery – it is deeply rooted in the community.”
“Through our partnership with the South Africa College of Tourism, we are committed to upskilling local talent, ensuring that the hotel creates sustainable employment and meaningful opportunities for the surrounding communities.”
This signing follows recent Tapestry Collection by Hilton signings across Sub-Saharan Africa, as Hilton continues to focus on expanding its lifestyle portfolio in the region.
