The Scoin Shop Expands: New Flagships Ride South Africa’s Gold Boom

In a striking example of South Africa’s enduring demand for gold, The Scoin Shop – the country’s leading retailer of gold coins, bullion and collectables – has opened three flagship stores and refreshed existing sites in 2025.

With the gold price repeatedly hitting record highs above $4,000/oz, the company is capitalising on surging demand to make precious-metal ownership more accessible to mainstream buyers.

Created in 1999 by The South African Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) as its consumer-facing retail brand, The Scoin Shop celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. What started as one Sandton City outlet has grown into a national network.

This year’s expansion – new stores at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront and Tyger Valley Centre, plus a Johannesburg flagship at Bedford Centre – is a direct response to the current gold bull market.

“Gold’s shine has never been brighter,” says CEO Rael Demby, “and we’re bringing more South Africans than ever into the excitement of owning a piece of history and security.”

The rollout began in July with Tyger Valley. The bright, modern store in the long-established Cape Town mall fuses sleek design with subtle mining references.

Shoppers encounter curated displays tracing South Africa’s gold story – Krugerrands alongside rare local issues – and an international zone featuring coins from the UK, Canada and France.

Private consultation pods and educational touchpoints simplify the role of precious metals as a store of value and portfolio diversifier. Early results show footfall above target and 30% of sales to first-time buyers.

The August opening at the V&A Waterfront took the concept further, turning a prime harborside unit into an immersive “museum of metals”.

A breathtaking 44 × 31-inch mosaic portrait of Nelson Mandela – created by British artist Ed Chapman from 5,340 one-cent pennies – anchors displays that link the Witwatersrand rush to artefacts, archival images and timelines, creating a compact,  cultural experience.

For the 24 million annual visitors, the store is rapidly becoming a notable stop, combining retail with accessible South African heritage.

Crowning the trio is the Bedford Centre flagship. It marries elegance and education. Striking window displays showcase some of the world’s rarest limited-edition issues – possible because The Scoin Shop is the only African retailer with direct import agreements from partners such as The East India Company, The Perth Mint, Royal Canadian Mint and Monnaie de Paris.

“This store celebrates our gold heritage while delivering a modern, engaging experience,” Demby said at the launch. Located in Johannesburg’s affluent east, the flagship is already attracting strong interest from collectors seeking tangible assets in uncertain times.

Complementing the new openings are refurbishments at Brooklyn Mall (completed in March) and The Pavilion in Durban (due for completion early 2026), reinforcing the brand’s omnichannel strategy.

Looking ahead, Demby confirms further locations are under consideration for 2026. “We’re not just selling coins; we’re building wealth resilience,” he says.

With central banks and retail buyers driving sustained demand, The Scoin Shop’s expansion positions it firmly at the centre of South Africa’s golden moment.
