JSE warns of scam involving a fake video of Leila Fourie
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) has warned of deep fake videos of its executives currently circulating on Facebook and other social media platforms.
The videos falsely feature JSE Group CEO Leila Fourie and Director of Information Services, Mark Randall, promoting fraudulent investment schemes.
These videos are scams that spread misinformation, aiming to defraud members of the public. The JSE is actively working with relevant platforms to remove the videos.
“It is important to note that no JSE employee, including JSE executives or board members, will provide investment advice,” the exchange said.
The JSE added that it will never request personal information or financial contributions via social media platforms.
The JSE does not authorise these groups or the types of groups, and the investments referred to are neither authorised nor endorsed by the JSE.
“The only way to invest on the JSE is through an authorised JSE member or broker,” the exchange explained.
The JSE urged the public to exercise caution regarding other scams that are circulated using platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
“People should not engage with or accept requests from any WhatsApp or Telegram group or message that displays the JSE logo, JSE name or any reference to the JSE,” it said.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange highlighted that it does not operate any official communication channels on WhatsApp or Telegram.
“Members of the public are encouraged to remain vigilant and report all suspicious activity directly to the JSE,” it said.
