Huge new shopping mall with a Pick n Pay, Shoprite, and Boxer opening in South Africa

A new 32,000 m² shopping mall is under construction in Pretoria East, with major retailers including Shoprite, Boxer, Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem, and Clicks.

Kings Walk Shopping Centre is being developed at the corner of Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Bronkhorstspruit Road, a major commuter route connecting Mamelodi with surrounding towns and business areas.

The centre is being developed and owned by Moolman Group and designed by MDS Architecture. It is planned to open in October 2027.

The development will have 90 stores and 1,200 parking bays, with the centre looking to provide an offering that appeals to two distinct markets.

Firstly, Solomon Mahlangu Drive carries substantial commuter traffic to and from Mamelodi.

At the same time, Bronkhorstspruit Road runs alongside residential estates and newer housing developments.

Considering Kings Walk’s position between Mamelodi and the more affluent suburbs of Pretoria East, it has been designed to serve customers from different income groups.

The developers have also adapted the retail layout to account for the differences between these two areas.

Stores near the Bronkhorstspruit Road entrance are intended to cater more towards middle- and higher-income shoppers.

Retailers closer to the Solomon Mahlangu Drive entrance will focus more on value-conscious customers.

A dedicated taxi rank and pedestrian entrance are also planned to accommodate public transport users. The pedestrian entrance will include a waiting area with Wi-Fi and charging facilities.

The developers expect demand for the shopping centre to increase in the coming years. This is because the Eastern Tshwane area, where Kings Walk is being built, is experiencing significant residential growth.

Cosmo has launched the first phase of a planned 10,000-unit residential precinct, with the first residents initially expected to take occupation from April 2026. Balwin Properties is planning a further 7,100 residential units nearby.

These developments are expected to add to demand for grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, and other everyday services.

Kings Walk’s design

The centre’s main retail offering includes Shoprite, Boxer, Pick n Pay, Dis-Chem, and Clicks. Pick n Pay Liquor is also listed among the planned tenants, alongside other national brands and local retailers.

Pick n Pay will be operated by an established franchisee with experience running multiple stores.

The centre is designed around a curved shopping mall, with Boxer and Pick n Pay anchoring opposite ends. Shoprite will be positioned near the central food court.

The layout is intended to provide convenient access to everyday shopping while accommodating a broader mix of retail and dining options.

Kings Walk will also include an outdoor entertainment area designed to give visitors more than a conventional shopping experience.

The north-eastern outdoor precinct is planned to include an amphitheatre, LED screens, a water feature for children, a play area, a stage, and landscaped lawns.

The space is intended to accommodate events and give families somewhere to spend time outside the shops.

Visitors will be able to bring their own chairs to watch events on a large screen. Restaurants, including Spur and Panarottis, are also planned to have outdoor seating areas.

The design incorporates indigenous trees, green walls and landscaped areas. The developers are investigating the possibility of turning the nearby floodline area into a landscaped park.

MDS Architecture partner Pierre Lahaye said the design was intended to connect the centre with its surrounding landscape and community.

“The design philosophy here was about creating a sophisticated, contemporary environment that feels genuinely connected to its context: the landscape, the community, the street,” he said.

Inside, the mall will feature natural light, timber accents, pendant lighting, and bespoke furniture. A central tree is planned for the main court, providing a focal point for the shopping area.

Local artwork from the surrounding area is also being commissioned for the development.
