New shopping mall with a Shoprite, Boxer, and Clicks opens in the heart of the most valuable platinum reserve in the world

Malekane Mall opened its doors to the public on 24 September 2026, housing 60 stores across 19,000 m².

The mall is located in Tubatse, in the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC). This complex is the largest layered igneous intrusion within the Earth’s crust.

The BIC is home to 20 mine operations, holding between 70% and 75% of the world’s platinum resources and producing 70% of the global platinum supply.

On Thursday, 24 September, Malekane Mall held its official opening, introducing a new retail destination designed to serve the surrounding communities.

The official ribbon-cutting was led by Chief Nkwane Malekane from the Ga-Malekane Tribal Authority.

This ceremony marked the culmination of a development journey built on close engagement with the local community and traditional leadership.

Spanning 19,000 m² and home to 60 retailers, Malekane Mall said it brings a strong mix of grocery, fashion, services, food, and everyday essentials closer to the communities it serves.

The mall is anchored by Shoprite, Boxer, Roots, and Cashbuild, complemented by leading national retailers, such as Clicks, Jet, PEP, Ackermans, Truworths, Mr Price, and KFC.

Malekane Mall was developed with a broader commitment to supporting local economic and community development.

R13 million was invested in surrounding roads, public infrastructure and bulk services, contributing to improved accessibility and infrastructure within the area.

The recently completed adjacent bridge has further improved accessibility and road safety for surrounding communities.

The development created 700 permanent jobs, and during construction, almost R20 million was spent on local labour and materials.

The project has also supported renovations at local crèches and established partnerships with surrounding schools.

The opening of the mall marks the culmination of two decades of collaboration between the developers, traditional leadership, and the local community.

The development was led by Twin City in partnership with GMI Property Group.

Twin City CEO Ryno de Leeuw said the vision for Malekane Mall has always extended beyond retail.

“The response to our opening has been incredible, and it has been very special to welcome the community into their new mall,” De Leeuw said.

“We look forward to growing alongside them and making Malekane Mall a place that people are proud to call their own.”

He said the mall is now positioned to grow alongside the community and establish itself as an important social, economic, and commercial hub for Steelpoort and the surrounding areas.
