The ultra-luxury Pick n Pay with its own sushi bar, coffee shop, wine cellar, and chocolatier station

Pick n Pay on Nicol is an ultra-luxury retail store with a focus on product quality, an extensive range of products, and third-party services.

The flagship Pick n Pay store in Sandton, Gauteng, was first opened in October 2010 as a green store, serving as a departure from standard box-style supermarkets.

It was built with double-volume glass windows to maximise natural lighting. It also features solar panelling, rainwater harvesting, and low-flow sanitary ware.

In October 2019, the retail giant completed a store revamp at Pick n Pay on Nicol as an example of its next-generation flagship store model.

The store shifted its focus toward fresh food, ready-to-eat artisanal meal options, and lifestyle convenience under one roof.

The revamped store featured a bakery and patisserie offering artisanal breads, sourdoughs, and freshly baked Viennoiserie pastries.

The butchery was extended, and a dedicated fish market was added, featuring sustainably sourced seafood, fresh mussels, and an oyster bar.

A standout feature is its hot and prepared food, which includes a made-to-order Burger Grill Bar, a chicken rotisserie, a fish-and-chip grill, and deli options.

There is also a Teppanyaki grill bar alongside an upgraded sushi counter, where shoppers can enjoy freshly made sushi.

The store features a specialised cheese room carrying local artisanal and international cheeses, offering vegan and lactose-free options.

It has partnered with local bean-to-bar chocolatier, CocoaFair, to showcase and sell their chocolates produced using beans sourced directly from farmers.

A dedicated organic coffee station and a freshly squeezed juice bar are available for shoppers looking for something to drink.

Liquor and beverage cellar at Pick n Pay on Nicol

The flagship Pick n Pay store has a wine cellar stocking over 800 wines, complete with an on-site wine advisor and tasting table.

The Growler Bar, located in the liquor store, allows patrons to purchase and refill 2L glass growlers with fresh draught craft beer.

It also features an in-store, sit-down café and social gathering spot serving breakfast, lunch, and speciality drinks.

Pick n Pay partnered with Clicks Pharmacy and MyLife Healthcare Centre for clinical services, along with superfoods, plant-based nutrition, and organic items.

For added convenience, the store has a money counter for TymeBank kiosk services, PnP money transfers, utility bill payments, and event and flight tickets.

Daily Investor visited Pick n Pay on Nicol, and it delivered on what it promised. It is an ultra-luxury store with an extensive range of products.

The quality of the prepared products, including fresh food, sandwiches, and baked products, is exceptional.

Shoppers were buying fresh oysters, which the Pick n Pay assistant behind the counter opened for them.

The staff were well-trained and friendly. They were on par with what most people experience at other high-end food retailers like Woolworths.
