Buyers flocking to R1.3 billion luxury redevelopment in Cape Town

Nearly half of the 62 luxury apartments at a R1.3 billion redevelopment, Mama Shelter Residences Cape Town, have already been sold within a month of launch.

A total of 27 residences, valued collectively at just over R100 million, have been secured by buyers who have each paid a non-refundable deposit.

The building, located on 111 Bree Street in Cape Town, previously housed Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, which relocated to the Foreshore several years ago.

Now, it is being redeveloped into a new R1.3 billion, mixed-use redevelopment that will feature 62 residences and a 127-key hotel.

Rapidly taking shape, Mama Shelter Residences forms part of a larger mixed-use development by Kasada and Ingenuity, set to open in the third quarter of 2026.

With a construction workforce of more than 600 currently on-site each day, the completed project will employ over 150 people across the hotel and its three food and beverage outlets.

Kasada is an independent real estate private equity firm focused on Africa’s hospitality sector, while Ingenuity is a leading property and development company based in the Western Cape.

Mama Shelter was originally founded in 2008 by the Trigano family, and in 2014 partnered with Accor, one of the world’s largest hospitality groups.

Today, it forms part of Ennismore, a creative hospitality collective known for brands rooted in culture and community.

“The response to the launch of these stylish apartments in vibrant Bree Street has been exceptional,” said Basil Moraitis, regional head of Pam Golding Properties in the Western Cape.

“The majority of purchasers are familiar with the brand offering, mainly acquiring studio, one- and two-bedroom residences for leisure use.”

Prices start from R2.9 million for a studio and go up to R23.3 million for the three-bedroom Grand Mama Penthouse.
