End of DStv as you know it
MultiChoice has introduced a new look for its pay-TV service, DStv, along with an updated product offering.
The name ‘DStv Expect+’ will also form part of a new marketing campaign for the company.
At a media event in Randburg, Johannesburg, on Monday, 7 September, MultiChoice CEO Willington Ngwepe called this the most significant rethink of DStv’s offering in 15 years.
He said the changes were made in response to calls from consumers that they want greater simplification and value from DStv.
Ngwepe said DStv’s 15-year-old pack structure no longer meets evolving customer expectations.
He said value perception and limited choice rank amongst the key reasons for customers dropping the service.
In response, “we have built a modernised, customer-centric package, with greater choice and differentiation”, he said.
Now, DStv will offer new packages at different price tiers, as well as new channels.
The new channels include Wethu+, SS KICKOFF, M-Net Movies+, M-Net Movies Stars, M-Net Movies Legends, SS Football Plus, SS Africa, SS Extra, SS Extra 2, France24, and Church TV.
Notably, no content will be leaving the service. Rather, the channels available to customers have been reorganised into different packages.
MultiChoice’s new packages will be available from 17 September 2026. The new packages are as follows:
- Starter, at R99 per month, will include 85 TV channels, including sports like Premier League matches of the week on the SuperSport Kickoff channel.
- Select, at R299 per month, will offer 100 TV channels, carry SuperSport’s PSL soccer content, and include M-Net’s Mzansi Magic and Nickelodeon’s kids channel.
- Sports, at R399 per month, will offer 115 TV channels, including SuperSport’s Premier League and UEFA content, as well as T20 cricket.
- Movies & Series, at R500 per month, will offer 115 TV channels, including M-Net, which has only been available on DStv Premium.
- Premium, at R799 per month, will offer 130 TV channels and include Formula 1, MotoGP, premium rugby, such as Springbok matches, golf, and ATP tennis.
For the time being, these new packages will only be available in South Africa, with a Rest of Africa rollout still coming.
Along with this enhanced product offering, DStv will also debut a new look, shedding its historic blue in favour of a new black-and-white look.
This brings DStv in line with its parent’s new owner, the French media giant Canal+, which completed its acquisition of MultiChoice in September 2025.
However, Ngwepe specified that this was not a “Canal+ rebrand in disguise”, with DStv remaining a strong brand for the group.
MultiChoice’s head of content, Renee Jacobs, said at the event on Monday that this marks a new era for DStv.
She said the company and its pay-TV service can now benefit from the global scale and reach of Canal+, “so expect more”.
