Shoprite Checkers rolled out 61 new stores in South Africa in four months

Shoprite opened 71 new stores in the four months through October 2026, 61 of which were in its core Supermarkets RSA segment.

This segment includes Shoprite’s Shoprite, Usave, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, and LiquorShop brands.

This comes as Shoprite continues to rapidly expand its store estate, boasting a footprint of 3,720 stores across Africa at the end of its 2026 financial year.

Shoprite outlined its new store openings in an operational update for the four months through October 2026, released on Friday, 6 November.

The retailer reported that, at a group level, sales grew by 6.4%, with the core Supermarkets RSA segment increasing sales by 7.1%.

This means Shoprite’s Supermarkets RSA segment’s sales growth outpaced the broader market by 5.3 percentage points.

“Internal selling price inflation has remained in line with the 0.6% previously reported for July 2026, measuring 0.7% for the four-month period,” the group said.

The retailer said this low inflation in internal selling prices means the segment continues to benefit from the positive mix effect resulting from Checkers and Checkers Hyper’s leading sales growth.

This growth is supported by Shoprite’s on-demand delivery platform, Sixty60, which grew sales by 33.4% in the four months through October 2026.

“The business remains well positioned from a cost management perspective, including in respect of lease liability finance charge growth,” Shoprite said.

The retailer added that its cash generation also remains strong, supporting lower net borrowing costs.

One drag on the results in this four-month period was Shoprite’s OK Foods franchise division, which saw its sales decline by 1.5%.

This division closed 51 stores in the second half of Shoprite’s 2026 financial year, resulting in a decline in sales. However, the segment still reported positive growth in trading profit.
