Pick n Pay rolling out ‘new’ stores across South Africa
Pick n Pay has continued upgrading key stores across South Africa as the retailer looks to revive its fortunes through a more optimised footprint in the country.
This has seen the retailer close poorly-performing stores as part of its store estate reset programme, with this initiative improving the company’s gross profit margin by 0.4%.
The next step is the upgrading of select stores in South Africa to create ‘model’ Pick n Pays in each region the brand operates in.
These stores are heavily revamped to look more modern, appealing to customers, and feature improved fresh food offerings.
The latest example of these upgrades is Pick n Pay Klerksdorp, which is set to be the model store for the North-West Province.
Pick n Pay said this store offers North West customers a modernised, one-stop shopping destination that delivers greater convenience, variety and value.
The Klerksdorp Hyper has been completely refreshed to bring shoppers a contemporary store experience with an expanded product range and improved layout.
“The relaunch marks another step in Pick n Pay’s national Hypermarket renewal programme, focused on enhancing stores and delivering a world-class retail experience to customers across South Africa,” Pick n Pay’s chief marketing officer, Katherine Madley, said.
“Our new-look Klerksdorp Hypermarket has been carefully designed to reflect what customers value most – choice, quality, and savings,” Madley said.
“We’ve modernised every aspect of the store to create a welcoming and convenient space where customers can enjoy one-stop shopping and savings.”
The refurbished store layout has been reflowed to improve navigation and allow for an expanded Tech and TV section, complemented by a new Cellular and Accessories department.
The General Merchandise offering now includes an extended range of large appliances, DIY tools, and home essentials, providing everything customers need under one roof.
In addition, the outdoor living section has been enhanced to feature a wide selection of braais, patio furniture, garden products, and pool accessories.
“Pick n Pay’s store renewal programme is key to our national turnaround strategy,” Pick n Pay CEO Sean Summers said.
“We’re investing in strategic refurbishments, right-sizing stores where needed, and creating new-generation formats that deliver more value and variety.”
“The refreshed Klerksdorp Hyper represents the best of this ambition, presenting a flagship store designed to serve all our customers’ needs under one roof.”
The relaunch of the Klerksdorp Hypermarket comes after the opening of Pietermaritzburg Hyper, and the upgrade and relaunch of several other existing hypers across the country.
Pick n Pay store renewal

Pick n Pay stores across South Africa are being revamped, with a total of 17 to be completed before the end of the year.
CEO Summers explained this in more detail following the company’s recent interim results presentation, outlining how it plans to win back customers.
“Going forward, any further changes to our store estate will simply be a normal part of assessing each store’s performance as leases come up for renewal,” Summers said.
“Critically, the optimisation of our store estate has removed a large number of loss-making stores out of the system.”
He said the trimmed-down store estate allows Pick n Pay to service its customers better and support its long-term sustainable growth.
This plan is built on the foundation created by the listing of Boxer separately on the JSE and a rights issue for Pick n Pay shareholders to strengthen the company’s balance sheet.
As a result, Summers believes the company has adequate capital to achieve what it wants to in the medium term, including store revamps.
In September 2025, Pick n Pay opened its first hypermarket in Pietermaritzburg, a conversion of the existing supermarket at Midlands Liberty Mall.
Following the reopening of the Klerksdorp hypermarket, Pick n Pay is set to revamp and reopen stores in Ottery and Longbeach in the coming months.
The new hypermarket format introduces an expanded general merchandise section, including tech and appliances, DIY and tools, and outdoor and garden essentials.
The fresh food offering is also enhanced, featuring gourmet butcheries, frozen meats and fish, a biltong bar, and a convenient ‘Grab & Go’ counter.
Shoppers can also expect a broader grocery range, with new additions such as bulk cleaning products, sweets, catering supplies, and pet care.
This is only the start. Summers added that many other Pick n Pay stores across South Africa will also be revamped.
“Next year, we will have the Pick’n Pay Waterfront redone, and we are revamping our Sea Point store,” he said.
The company is also redoing its Canal Walk and La Lucia Mall supermarkets. “We have a whole list of stores we are going to be revamping,” he said.
He added that Pick n Pay still has excellent real estate and fantastic locations, which will serve the company well in the future.
