One share billionaire investor Bill Ackman is buying
Billionaire super-investor Bill Ackman made only one change to his portfolio in the fourth quarter of 2022 – adding to his stake in Howard Hughes Corporation.
Ackman is one of the most successful investors of his generation, with his Pershing Square Holdings managing to compound annually at a rate of 16.1% for nearly two decades.
Pershing Square has over $15 billion in assets under management and is publicly listed on the Euronext Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.
Ackman is highly educated, having received a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Harvard and completing an MBA at Harvard Business School in 1992.
Pershing Square was founded in 2004 by Ackman with $54 million of his own money and funds from his former business partner Leucadia National.
Ackman was one of the few investors to make a profit during the financial crisis of 2007-2008 through his purchases of credit default swaps against the Municipal Bond Insurance Association’s debt.
Heavily inspired by Warren Buffett’s approach to investing, Ackman is a value investor who looks to buy shares in companies that are in temporary trouble and undervalued.
Ackman takes an active approach to investing where he acquires a share in a company with the intention of taking an active role on the board to implement management or governance changes to unlock long-term value.
As a highly disciplined investor, Ackman is known for his rigid investment principles, going so far as setting them in stones placed on each employee’s desk at Pershing Square.
Bill Ackman’s portfolio at the end of 2022
Pershing Square’s portfolio is highly concentrated, with its $8.8 billion being invested in only six shares.
The only change in this portfolio was the additional purchase of 2.2 million shares of property developer Howard Hughes Corporation.
This increased Ackman’s investment in Howard Hughes by 16.7%, with a total of $1.2 billion invested.
The rest of Ackman’s portfolio remained unchanged.
