MultiChoice calls on shareholders to claim R270 million in owed dividends

Phuthuma Nathi – MultiChoice South Africa’s BBBEE share scheme – has urged shareholders and families of deceased shareholders to claim the dividends owed to them.

According to Phuthuma Nathi, R270 million in historical dividends remain unclaimed despite the entity’s annual national campaigns to locate shareholders with unclaimed dividends.

While this is a relatively small fraction of the total R19.2 billion that has been paid out since 2006, it is still meaningful to the shareholders in question.

“Phuthuma Nathi is committed to finding its shareholders and ensuring that they receive what is rightfully theirs,” it said in a statement.

The scheme added that the most common reasons for unclaimed dividends include shareholders not updating their personal or banking details, as well as dividends being owed to the estates of deceased shareholders.

Shareholders who have not received dividends between 2006 and 2025, as well as family members of a deceased shareholder, are urged to contact the scheme in any of the following ways:

  • Call centre: 086 011 6226 (Mon–Fri, 7am – 6pm, excluding public holidays)
  • WhatsApp: 011 321 5400
  • Email: [email protected]

You will then need to complete a FICA verification process that involves providing the following documents:

  • Proof of identity
  • An up-to-date bank statement or confirmation letter
  • Proof of address

Once verified, applicants can expect to be received the dividends they are owed within 3-5 working days.

Phuthuma Nathi

Phuthuma Nathi was created in 2006 to give black South Africans the chance to own an indirect stake in MultiChoice South Africa.

Phuthuma Nathi now owns 25% of MultiChoice South Africa, and according to the official Phuthuma Nathi website, the scheme has over 80,000 black shareholders.

These individuals have used their shareholding for a variety of uses – “from paying for their children’s retirement, to renovating their homes, to enjoying a well-deserved holiday.”

Since Phuthuma Nathi’s establishment, dividends worth over R19.2 billion have been paid.

In August 2025, the latest ordinary dividend was declared to the tune of R412.5 million.

Furthermore, “Provided that the reorganisation is successfully implemented,” an additional extraordinary dividend of R343.75 million would be paid out due to the reorganisation of MultiChoice South Africa Holdings
