Purple Group (JSE: PPE) Volume Analysis: Has Smart Money Arrived Ahead of Full Year Results?

A review of the monthly trading history for Purple Group Ltd (JSE:PPE) reveals a significant shift in market participation over the last year, suggesting growing anticipation ahead of the company’s FY 2025 results for the year ended 31 August 2025 which are expected to be released on 12 November 2025.

While the stock’s recent price rally is impressive, it’s the volume data that tells the real story.

Purple Group Ltd is the majority owner of South Africa’s popular investment and wealth-building platform EasyEquities which now serves over 1,2m clients and R80bn in assets under custody.

This time last year, in October 2024, the stock saw what was then a major volume spike of 19.3 million shares. This activity was significant, helping to push the monthly closing price up 23% to 98 ZAc.

However, this interest appeared to be temporary. In the following five months, from November 2024 to March 2025, trading volumes dried up, falling to a quieter average of just 10,7 million shares per month.

The first true sign of a change in character arrived in April 2025, aligning with the release of the company’s strong half-year results.

That month, volume exploded to 24.1 million shares, sparking a 21% price jump to 123 ZAc. This event appears to have attracted a new wave of interest, as monthly volumes thereafter rarely fell back to their previous dormant levels.

This trend of higher volumes continued to build as the company’s 31 August 2025 year-end approached.

September 2025 saw a record-breaking 29.1 million shares change hands, the highest monthly volume seen in over two years.

This massive surge in participation is what fuelled the stock’s sharp rally from an opening price of 170 ZAc to a new intraday high of 274 ZAc.

This level of volume is not typical and strongly supports the hypothesis that larger buyers, and potentially institutional funds, have been building positions in the stock.

As we head towards the 12 November release of the August year-end results, the market is clearly anticipating a significant announcement.

While the price did pull back in October on lighter volume (13.4 million shares), the question is whether the September surge was a “buying climax” or, more likely, a sustained wave of accumulation from “smart money” positioning for strong final results.
