WeBuyCars rolling out new supermarkets in two South African cities
WeBuyCars has opened two new flagship vehicle ‘supermarkets’ in Cape Town and Pretoria North as the company continues to grow strongly across South Africa.
This growth comes despite the company operating in a difficult environment, with a surge in popularity of affordable Chinese vehicles impacting the company’s performance in the past year.
These ‘cheap’ new Chinese vehicles are offered at attractive price points, leading some of WeBuyCars’ typical buyers to opt for new cars rather than shop around for used alternatives.
However, while this is negatively impacting WeBuyCars’ performance now, the company expects this headwind to turn into a tailwind in the future.
As these new Chinese vehicles, alongside others, are added to the used-car market, it will expand WeBuyCars’ offering and enable it to compete head-on with new vehicles.
To accommodate future growth, WeBuyCars has been heavily investing in new vehicle supermarkets and buying pods across the country.
Currently, the company has 18 vehicle supermarkets and over 100 buying pods. This ensures it has a presence in every province and major city in South Africa.
The two newest vehicle supermarkets in Cape Town and Pretoria are not only intended to expand the company’s footprint, but also enhance its efficiency.
These two vehicle supermarkets are intended to reduce the operating costs of WeBuyCars in these two major cities and provide flagship exemplars for the rest of its network.
Construction of the Lansdowne Supermarket in Cape Town began in January 2025, culminating in a facility that now stands as the largest vehicle supermarket of its kind in the Western Cape.
The facility covers over 5.23 hectares – around five rugby fields – and has been designed for scale, efficiency, and customer convenience.
At its heart is a two-level warehouse with capacity for approximately 1,200 vehicles indoors.
In Pretoria North, the Montana Supermarket represents the largest facility of its kind in the area. Ground was broken on 28 May 2025, leading to the official opening late in November.
Positioned along Sefako Makgatho Drive, the supermarket features a 15,150 m² indoor warehouse, around one and a half rugby fields, with space for approximately 600 vehicles, complemented by an outdoor retail area that accommodates a further 600 vehicles.
Both of these supermarkets have been designed to enhance WeBuyCar’s efficiency and reduce the costs for the company to store and sell cars.
For example, the wash bays recycle and reuse up to 90% of the water consumed, while borehole systems and rainwater harvesting reduce reliance on municipal water supplies.
Photovoltaic solar installations support on-site energy requirements, lowering reliance on the national grid and supporting operational continuity during periods of load pressure.
For customers, the new facilities translate into an improved experience marked by greater convenience, faster processing times, and access to a wide range of vehicles in modern, purpose-built environments.
The scale and layout of both supermarkets are intended to simplify every step of the process, whether customers are buying or selling.
