431 bank branches where you can get Smart IDs in South Africa
There are 431 bank branches in South Africa where people can obtain a new Smart ID card to replace their green ID book.
This milestone has come within six months of the first bank branches with this capability launching, with Capitec and Standard Bank leading the way.
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the department plans to expand the offering to at least 200 more branches before the end of the current financial year.
Responding to a question in Parliament, Schreiber said the initiative has dramatically increased Home Affairs’ service footprint at minimal cost.
“Currently, 410 bank branches are live with 574,371 applications being processed through bank channels as of 13 August,” Schreiber said.
Daily Investor’s analysis shows that, according to the banks themselves, there were 431 bank branches offering Smart ID services on 28 August.
The partnership is set to continue expanding as established partners enable the services at more of their branches and new banks come online.
“Integrations and expansion are progressing across the major banks, including Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, and Absa, while OM Bank has signed the relevant agreements and is being onboarded,” Schreiber said.
The minister also revealed that the programme is being progressively expanded beyond Smart ID re-issues to include passport services, first-time Smart ID applications, and home delivery.
This will significantly reduce dependence on traditional Home Affairs offices to handle more complex transactions and free up resources within the department.
Home Affairs’ 2026/27 target provides for the activation of at least 200 additional bank branches to provide Smart ID Card and passport re-issue services.
However, Schreiber said the partnership programme is progressing ahead of this target.
From the 431 branches already live, participating banks have indicated the capacity to scale the footprint to at least 750 branches during the financial year.
This would represent approximately 340 additional branch activations from the current footprint.
Schreiber’s Home Affairs overhaul also extends to the department’s physical offices, targeting the modernisation of 75 of its local offices during the financial year.
The modernisation programme includes upgrading network bandwidth and hardware, replacing legacy connectivity and extending Service Manager Web and Live Capture capabilities.
“This intervention is complemented by the expansion of bank branches, mobile units and other assisted-digital channels, particularly in rural and underserved areas,” Schreiber said.
The ultimate aim is to increase Smart ID issuing capacity while progressively reducing reliance on the Green ID Book.
