New state-of-the-art shopping mall for South Africa’s second-most populated province
Moolman Group announced that the new Prince Buthelezi Mall in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, will open its doors in April 2026.
Moolman Group is one of South Africa’s largest property investment groups, owning and managing property portfolios throughout the country.
The company owns numerous prominent shopping centres, including Mall of the North, Middelburg Mall, Northridge Mall, Jean Crossing, and Rustenburg Mall.
Its latest development is the Prince Buthelezi Mall in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, with co-owners Twin City and Melta Capital.
Prince Buthelezi Mall is constructed on a former sugar cane field. MDS Architects team designed it to reflect its setting and community.
It will consist of a single-level enclosed shopping centre of 36,322 square meters serving the wider Empangeni region.
“The development will offer a modern approach to shopping and include conveniences such as an entertainment space, art features, free Wi-Fi, and a play area,” it said.
Anchor stores will include Checkers, Shoprite, Woolworths and Dis-Chem. Well-known favourites will further complement the tenant mix.
Leading retailers set to enter Empangeni for the first time at Prince Buthelezi Mall include Crazy Plastic, Crazy Pets, Converse, Roots and Polo.
There will be a strong fashion variety, including Truworths, Miladys, Identity, Pick n Pay Clothing, Mr Price, Legit, Edgars, Ackermans, Pep, Jam Clothing, Old Khaki, and Studio 88.
It will also feature banking facilities and numerous restaurants, including Fishaways, Hungry Lion, Ocean Basket, Steers, Mugg & Bean, Debonairs Pizza, Romans Pizza, and Wimpy.
Prince Buthelezi Mall is located on the R102, just off the N2 and John Ross Highway, which is the main intersection of Empangeni.
It is located 3.5 kilometres from the central business district and is near higher-end neighbourhoods, ideal for attracting the full spectrum of shoppers.
The mall is scheduled to be completed in the next 18 months and promises to transform Empangeni’s retail landscape.
“When it opens in April 2026, it will be the first convenient and appealing shopping destination rich in retail amenities, variety, and experiences under one roof,” Moolman Group said.
Moolman Group’s Steph Beyers says the shopping mall will be transformative for the community of Empangeni.
“An enjoyable shopping environment and a hassle-free customer experience will distinguish Prince Buthelezi Mall as an excellent shopping destination,” he said.
Beyers adds that much thought went into designing Prince Buthelezi Mall so that it caters to its future shoppers.
The new shopping mall will feature a large new taxi rank, free parking, a modern design, communal seating areas, and a safe and air-conditioned shopping experience.
Twin City CEO Ryno De Leeuw said the development of Prince Buthelezi Mall will see investments of over R100 million in the Empangeni economy.
The development has prioritised the use of local contractors, and the co-owners have committed to upgrading major roads around the mall.
