Beloved restaurant in South Africa’s richest city closes its doors after 32 years

Humble Harry’s, a popular neighbourhood restaurant in the Leaping Frog Centre in Fourways, Johannesburg, is closing its doors after 32 years.

The restaurant is popular among local residents for its relaxed atmosphere and menu options suitable for everything from early breakfasts to evening drinks.

It became known for its promotions, which include a Tuesday date night special where a dining partner eats free.

It is also renowned for its excellent coffee, teas, and desserts, as well as a bar featuring cocktails, a curated wine list, beer, and spirits.

Over the years, Humble Harry’s has launched many initiatives to help the community, including an annual breakfast for the less fortunate.

It has also launched Simple Sacks, bags of everyday essentials for people in need available in-store for customers to buy and gift to disadvantaged people.

However, this has now come to an end. On 4 November, 2026, the restaurant announced that, after 32 years in business, it was time to say goodbye.

“It is with a heavy heart that Paul Economou and the Humble Harry’s team announce the closure of our beloved restaurant,” it said.

“After 32 years in the restaurant industry in Fourways, including 18 wonderful years of Humble Harry’s, difficult circumstances have brought this chapter to a close.”

It said that for Economou, Humble Harry’s has always been so much more than a restaurant or business.

“It has been a place filled with familiar faces, lasting friendships, laughter and countless special memories,” it said.

“To every customer who walked through our doors, shared a meal, celebrated an occasion or simply stopped by for a chat, thank you.”

“Your loyalty, kindness and support have meant more to Paul than words can express. You were the reason he looked forward to coming to work every morning.”

“Although saying goodbye is never easy, we leave with hearts full of gratitude for the wonderful community that has supported us throughout the years.”

Humble Harry’s is not unique

The closure of Humble Harry’s is not unique. Thousands of businesses in South Africa are forced to shut their doors every year.

The latest Statistics South Africa showed that 2,089 companies have been liquidated in South Africa in 2026.

Although this is 6.6% lower than the same period in 2025, the underlying financial strain remains high across most sectors of the economy.

This indicates the high failure rate among businesses in South Africa. Between 70% and 80% of small and medium-sized businesses fail within their first five years.

This failure rate is one of the highest in the world, which shows what a tough environment businesses operate in.

The challenges include a mix of internal management gaps, structural economic issues, and financial barriers.

Disruptions in local municipal services, such as water and electricity cuts, are particularly tough on small businesses.

High crime rates further compel SMEs to allocate a significant share of their operating revenue to private security and insurance.

These issues add an estimated 10% to 15% in additional operating expenses, eroding narrow profit margins.

South Africa’s poor economic growth over the last 17 years has been the final nail in the coffin for many businesses.

This low growth and high living costs strain household disposable income, hitting businesses like restaurants and retail stores.

Humble Harry’s, like many other restaurants and small businesses, has been a victim of these factors.
