Viking’s share portfolio revealed

Viking Global Investors is an American-based hedge fund in Greenwich, Connecticut, which manages $37 billion across public and private markets.

The firm was established in October 1999 by its CEO, Ole Andreas Halvorsen, and Brian Olson and David Ott.

Halvorsen was born in Norway and served as a leader of a Norwegian SEAL team after graduating from the Norwegian Naval Academy.

He then attended Williams College, where he graduated with a degree in economics and earned his MBA from Stanford.

Halvorsen previously worked for Julian Robertson at the firm Tiger Management, making him one of the “Tiger Cubs”.

Viking started with 17 employees and $520 million of capital. Today, the firm has more than 250 employees to manage its growing assets.

In 2017 the firm returned $8 billion of capital to investors to reset to what they considered an appropriate size. Viking managed to grow its capital back to the prior levels within three years.

Viking Global Investors’ success has helped Halvorsen accumulate a net worth of $6.6 billion, ranking him 375th on the Forbes billionaires list.
