Most popular JSE shares among SA’s top stock pickers in 2022
The most popular JSE listed share among South Africa’s prominent fund managers and analysts was MTN, followed by Coronation and FirstRand.
South Africa’s top fund managers, analysts, and investing experts share their views about local stocks on platforms like the JSE’s SA Stock Picks show and Business Day TV’s Stock Watch.
Daily Investor recorded their stock picks between 1 January 2022 and 6 December 2022 and analysed the results.
Many prominent investors formed part of this analysis, including FNB Wealth and Investments’ Wayne McCurrie, Sasfin Wealth’s David Shapiro, and Sanlam Private Wealth’s Nick Kunze.
Karl Gevers from Benguela Global Fund Managers, Roy Mutooni and Carmen Mpelwane from Absa Asset Management, and Sasfin’s Rob Towell were also included.
MTN was the most popular share, with many analysts highlighting that its strong performance and low share price make it a buy.
“MTN released a really good set of numbers recently, but the stock price has consistently declined and is now trading at under R130 per share,” Towell said in September.
Mutooni added that if you ignore the negative news and only look at MTN’s numbers, it looks cheap and trades on a low enterprise-value-to-EBITDA multiple.
Coronation was another popular pick. McCurrie said the share price was back at Covid lows, and despite dividend cuts, it is still a strong dividend payer.
“The price-to-earning (P/E) ratio is single digit, and you are in a bear market. It is a perfect situation to buy an asset management company,” he said.
FirstRand rounded out the top three. Neelash Hansjee from Old Mutual Investments is one of the stock pickers who liked this share.
“FirstRand looks attractive as it has strong capital with strong earnings to back it up. The momentum is still there, and I expect good earnings from them,” he said.
