The online service that makes more money than Takealot

Shoprite’s Sixty60 service has become a significant driver of revenue for the retailer, generating R25.5 billion in sales in the 2026 financial year.

To put this into perspective, Sixty60 made more sales than Takealot Group, which includes Takealot.com, Mr D, TakealotMORE, and Takealot Fulfilment Solutions.

This was revealed in Shoprite’s results for the 53 weeks ended 28 June 2026, which were released on Tuesday, 1 September 2026.

At the group level, Shoprite recorded a 7.1% increase in revenue to R274.8 billion and a 7.2% increase in sales to R270.8 billion.

The retailer’s biggest business unit, its Supermarkets RSA segment, saw sales grow by 7.1% to R228.7 billion.

Shoprite’s on-demand digital platform, Sixty60, was a standout performer in this segment, adding a record R6.6 billion in revenue for the year.

Shoprite did not share Sixty60’s total revenue figure, but said the platform increased its sales by 34.5% to reach R25.5 billion.

For context, the Takealot Group reported an 18% increase in revenue to $1 billion (R16.42 billion at the time) for its 2026 financial year.

Since its official debut in 2019, Sixty60 has grown into one of Shoprite’s biggest competitive advantages, solidifying the company’s position as South Africa’s largest grocery retailer.

While launched in 2019, Sixty60 was first piloted in parts of Sandton and Cape Town, with its national rollout to all nine provinces only happening in 2021.

Since then, the service has grown into Africa’s leading online grocery and general merchandise e-commerce platform.

Between Shoprite’s 2021 and 2026 financial years, Sixty60 expanded its footprint from 233 stores to 976 stores across the country.

The retailer only began sharing detailed financial data for Sixty60 in its 2025 financial year, when the service reported R18.9 billion in sales, reflecting a 47.7% year-on-year increase.

For 2026, Sixty60 reported sales of R25.5 billion and revenue of R6.6 billion, representing 9.28% of Shoprite’s group sales.

Prior to 2025, Shoprite reported only sales growth figures for Sixty60. Starting in the 2023 financial year, the platform grew sales by 81.50% year-on-year.

The year prior, in 2022, Shoprite revealed that Sixty60 captured an estimated 75% share of South Africa’s online grocery delivery market.

More recent estimates place Sixty60’s market share at 80% of the local on-demand grocery delivery market.

One consistent metric Shoprite has shared for Sixty60 over the past five years is its store footprint, which has expanded from 233 stores in 2021 to 976 today.

For reference, Shoprite operates 3,710 stores across its business, with 2,839 corporate stores in South Africa within the Supermarkets RSA segment alone.

The graphs below show how Sixty60 has grown in South Africa since 2021, based on the available data.
