Investec selling an iconic property in Johannesburg

Investec is selling its iconic 6,000-square-meter development in the heart of Illovo, 15 Chaplin, which it describes as a landmark in the area.

On Thursday, the Competition Commission announced that it had approved a transaction whereby Ingwe Surface Holdings will acquire 15 Chaplin from Investec Property.

Ingwe is 100% owned by Seriti Power, which, in turn, is 100% owned by Serity through Thabong Coal, Seriti Power Communities, and Seriti Power Employees.

Seriti operates opencast and underground thermal coal mines, which supply coal to local power stations and some export markets.

The Commission said the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market and does not raise significant public interest concerns.

Ingwe Surface Holdings’s headquarters is located at 15 Chaplin, the building it is buying from Investec.

15 Chaplin is located on the corner of Oxford and Chaplin roads in Illovo, Sandton. It is across the road from the Thrupps Centre and within walking distance of The Wanderers.

The building is located on the Gautrain Bus Route and features 24-hour security and backup generator facilities. There is also a rooftop entertainment area for tenants.

Investec described 15 Chaplin as a landmark exceptionally well positioned. The surrounding road networks link the greater Sandton and Rosebank areas.

“15 Chaplin endorses the new vogue of working, providing a modern functional design with sustainable green building elements that advocate cost-effective operations,” it said.

The surrounding area includes top restaurants, banks, a petrol station, the Wanderers golf club, and medical suites.

Investec Property bought 15 Chaplin from Victhyme Investments in 2024 after Competition Commission approval.
