New shopping mall at the centre of South Africa’s new R5 billion smart city

Leratong City Mall is a new shopping destination at the centre of South Africa’s new R5 billion smart city, set to open its doors on 29 October 2026.

Leratong City is a mixed-use development created through a partnership between the Gauteng government, Mogale City Local Municipality, and Trendville.

The new smart city is located at the intersection of major roads linking Mogale City, Soweto, Randfontein, Merafong, Roodepoort, Florida and Johannesburg.

The development extends over 350 hectares and will include 15,000 mixed-use housing units, a commercial precinct, and a private hospital.

Parks, public transport nodes, schools, and early childhood development centres are included in the later-phase development plans.

The city envisions urban spaces powered by technology, efficient and sustainable, characterised by improved living standards.

The development is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic and infrastructure development in the area.

Mogale City said the project outlined a forward-looking blueprint for transforming township and peri-urban areas.

This, it said, is achieved through innovative infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and intelligent mixed-use design.

With an investment value of R5 billion, it stands among the most significant developments in Mogale City over the next decade.

A sod turning ceremony was hosted on Thursday, 5 June 2025, with key stakeholders to mark the beginning of the project.

Since then, there has been significant progress, especially on the centrepiece, the 42,000 square meter Leratong City Mall.

Leratong City Mall will feature many top brands, including three supermarket anchors, Shoprite, Boxer Superstores, and Pick n Pay.

Two butchers have been confirmed, Roots and OBC Group, and South Africa’s top pharmacies, Clicks Group and Dischem, will be core tenants.

The mall will further feature nine banks and financial institutions, along with over 60 fashion stores.

There will be many restaurants, including Milky Lane, Panarotti’s, Chicken Licken, McDonald’s, Spur, Fishaways, and Famous Brands outlets.

Construction of the single-level shopping mall is progressing well, and it is set to open alongside Leratong City on 29 October 2026.
