Smart Money – SA Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Mampho Modise

In this Smart Money with Alishia Seckam interview, South African Reserve Bank (SARB) deputy governor Dr Mampho Modise discusses the Corporation for Deposit Insurance (CODI).

Dr Modise’s public service career began in 2004 as an intern at the SARB, where she steadily rose through the ranks to become an economist.

She then became a senior economist at the Economic Policy Unit of the National Treasury in 2009 and later became its director of Fiscal Policy.

Dr Modise then became the chief director of Strategy and Risk Management at the National Treasury’s Asset and Liability Management Division.

By 2017, Dr Modise was appointed deputy director-general for Public Finance at the National Treasury, where she was responsible for overseeing fiscal and financial monitoring in the evaluation of policy proposals.

Recently, in April 2024, Dr Modise was appointed to her current position as a deputy governor of the SARB by President Ramaphosa.

Dr Modise is also a member of the SARB’s Monetary Policy Committee and oversees the Financial Stability Cluster, which includes:

  • The newly established CODI
  • The Economic Statistics Department
  • The Risk Management and Compliance Department
  • The Fintech Unit

Dr Modise holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pretoria, which she obtained in 2013.
