Where South African investors get their news

The 2025 South African Investor and Banking Report revealed that most investors use news publications as their primary source of investment information.

Other popular sources include company reports, social media, podcasts, online videos, television, and books.

Daily Investor is the most popular news publication among investors, followed by Moneyweb, BusinessTech, Business Day, and Biznews.

The 2025 South African Investor and Banking Report is based on survey responses from South African retail and institutional investors.

The survey was conducted in April 2025 and received responses from 2,104 South African investors.

Many respondents were high-income earners and high-net-worth individuals, and 20% were institutional investors or worked for asset managers.

As part of the survey, respondents were asked where they get their information from, which forms their investment decisions.

98% of respondents said they use news publications, significantly higher than any other information source.

48% use company reports, 45% use social media, and 44% use podcasts and online videos. Only 27% use television shows, and 19% use books.

The company reports include annual reports, SENS announcements, and financial updates that companies provide to the market.

Company reports are much more popular among institutional investors than retail investors. This may be linked to skill level and resources.

Company reports are more difficult to understand, whereas news reports provide the information in an easy-to-understand format.

98% of respondents said they read Daily Investor, while 80% read Moneyweb, 55% read BusinessTech, 54% read Business Day, and 44% read Biznews.

Other popular news sources among South African investors include Daily Maverick, Bloomberg, Ghostmail, Business Times, News24 Business, and Business Report.
