Global Coin Trends Expected to Influence South African Investors After Berlin Fair

Trends unveiled at the recent World Money Fair in Berlin — the largest international gathering of coin dealers, mints and collectors — are expected to shape collecting and investment demand in South Africa throughout 2026.

Representatives of The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop attended the annual event, joining hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of visitors from across the globe to preview upcoming releases, technological advances and evolving collector preferences.

According to CEO Rael Demby, the fair provides critical insight into how the global coin market is developing.

“The World Money Fair shows just how international collecting has become,” says Demby. “South African collectors are increasingly aligned with global trends, and events like this allow us to bring those insights directly back to the local market.”

This year’s exhibition highlighted continued demand for coins that combine precious metal value with strong storytelling and cultural themes. Interest in gold and silver investment coins also remains strong, with many collectors balancing passion purchases with tangible asset considerations.

Another noticeable shift is the growing number of younger and first-time buyers entering the market, attracted by innovative designs and limited-edition releases.

“Collectors today want more than bullion value,” Demby adds. “They want coins that represent history, culture or significant global moments. That narrative element is becoming increasingly important.”

Industry experts say many of the products and design trends introduced in Berlin typically influence collector demand worldwide in the months that follow.

For South African collectors and investors, access to international releases and market insights is becoming increasingly important as collecting evolves into a more globally connected hobby and investment category.

With optimism evident across the industry following the Berlin event, 2026 is expected to bring strong interest in both collectable and investment-grade coins as the market continues to expand.
