DA can kiss GNU goodbye – Godongwana
South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana criticized the DA over its plan to oppose a key piece of budget legislation and suggested that if the party does object, it should quit the nation’s coalition government.
Lawmakers are currently voting on the framework, which establishes economic policy, revenue projections and limits on government spending, at a sitting in Cape Town.
The DA’s spokesman for finance, Mark Burke, said his party would reject the plan.
“I don’t think you can vote against a budget, and tomorrow you want to go and be part of its implementation,” Godongwana said at the end of a debate on the framework on Wednesday.
“It can’t be. You’ve got to draw a line at that point.”
The framework needs a simple majority of lawmakers attending the sitting to approve it for the legislation to be passed.
