Billionaire-backed petrol station taking over South Africa with 700 forecourts
Astron Energy has reached a major milestone in its rebranding program with the unveiling of its 700th site in Villiersdorp in the Western Cape.
This was announced by the group on Monday, 14 April. They explained that the achievement builds on the progress since the launch of its rebranding programme in 2022.
It also reflects the dedication of teams across the business, as well as strong collaboration with retail partners and all other stakeholders.
“The initiative is one of the most significant transformations in South Africa’s fuel industry in over three decades,” the group said.
Astron Energy operates the country’s second-largest petroleum retail network, with more than 800 service stations nationwide.
“We are thrilled to celebrate reaching nearly 90% of our network, signalling that the programme is approaching completion,” the group said.
Astron Energy Retail and Marketing General Manager John Bailey said the milestone reflects strong progress against an ambitious national rollout. “Rebranding 700 sites has been a significant undertaking.
“As we near completion, our focus remains on maintaining the highest safety and quality standards, while delivering a seamless and consistent customer experience across our network.”
The Villiersdorp retailer welcomed the milestone, noting the positive impact the refreshed brand has had on the local community.
“We are proud to bring Astron Energy’s new identity to Villiersdorp and remain committed to making every customer visit a positive experience,” said Ben Klindt.
Astron Energy continues to advance its goal of becoming South Africa’s leading fuel brand, with the 800-site milestone now firmly in sight.
The rebrand taking South Africa by storm

Previously known as Caltex, the fuel station’s name was changed to Astron following Glencore’s 2018 majority acquisition of the former Chevron South Africa. Since then, it has operated under the Caltex brand under a license agreement.
In August 2021, the group announced that all Caltex-branded service stations in South Africa and Botswana would be rebranded as Astron Energy. In August 2022, the company rebranded the first of its over 800 sites.
Notably, Astron owns and operates the country’s third-largest crude oil refinery in Cape Town and a lubricant manufacturing plant in Durban.
This makes it one of the few industry participants currently refining its own fuel rather than relying on imports.
To bolster its non-fuel retail offerings, Astron has also focused on strategic partnerships. This includes its partnership with Food Lover’s Market’s FreshStop, which was extended for 10 years in May 2024.
Following this, Food Lover’s Market Group CEO Brian Coppin said this marks the continuation of a 15-year, R830 million partnership with the Astron group.
Astron Energy explained that sites featuring a FreshStop have seen significant revenue and traffic returns as a result of the prime convenience store offering.
“Our figures show that when a fuel forecourt store converts to the FreshStop brand, the franchisees experience growth in fuel volume,” said FreshStop CEO Joe Boyle after the extension agreement came into effect.
“The FreshStop brand experienced 60% on average per year compound growth in sales in the first ten years.”
