The South African retail giant that has grown market share for five years

Shoprite’s local supermarkets segment has achieved its fifth consecutive year of market share gains, as the retailer continues to outperform.

Shoprite’s 2025 financial year saw the retail giant go from strength to strength, with impressive sales and earnings growth driven by the retailer’s core South African supermarkets business.

Shoprite is South Africa’s largest food retailer and owns well-known brands like Checkers, Usave, and Sixty60.

It is also one of the country’s best-performing retailers, with its latest results for the 2025 financial year set to be no exception.

On Tuesday, 5 August, Shoprite released a trading statement outlining its performance and expected financial results for the 52 weeks ended 29 June 2025.

This period marked a busy year for Shoprite, with several corporate actions taking place.

This includes purchasing the entirety of Pingo, a last-mile logistics provider and the powerhouse behind the retailer’s successful Sixty60 service.

In addition, Shoprite sold its furniture business to Pepkor during the period. While the retailer’s furniture businesses in Mozambique and Angola were not included in this sale, Shoprite opted to either close or sell them, classifying them as discontinued in the period.

The company also classified its operations in Malawi and Ghana during the period, with both set to be sold before the end of 2025.

Amidst this busy year, Shoprite’s strong financial performance continued, with total sales growth of 9%, and 8.9% for continuing operations.

The retail giant expects its earnings per share for the period to grow by between 17% and 27%, and between 12.6% and 22.6% for continued operations.

This was largely driven by the group’s core business, Supermarkets RSA, which achieved sales growth of 9.5% in the period. This segment contributes 84.5% to group sales.

Like-for-like sales for this segment increased by a more modest 4.8%, while internal selling price inflation averaged 2.3%.

Specifically, Checkers and Checkers Hyper, which includes Checkers LiquorShop, reported sales growth of 13.8%.

The retailer’s on-demand delivery platform, Sixty60, also continued its strong performance, with online sales up 47.7%.

Shoprite and Usave, which includes Shoprite LiquorShop, reported sales growth of 5.9%.

The company continued to expand its footprint over the period, with its core RSA operations opening 194 main banner supermarkets this year.

This includes 43 Shoprite stores, 38 Usave stores, 29 Checkers stores and three Checkers Hyper stores. In addition, the LiquorShop business added 36 Checkers and 45 Shoprite LiquorShops, respectively.

While its South African supermarkets contributed the largest share of overall sales, Shoprite also recorded a strong performance in its Supermarkets Non-RSA segment.

In rand terms, this division saw sales increase by 6.4%, equating to an 8.1% contribution to group sales. In constant currency, Supermarkets Non-RSA increased sales by 14.2%.

This segment’s store base increased by a net 14 stores to a total of 268 stores operating in seven countries.

Shoprite is expected to release its full results for the year ended 29 June 2025 on Tuesday, 2 September 2025.
