Top South African exec quits R13 million a year job to move to the Western Cape

An executive director of Aspen Pharmacare, Reginald Haman, has resigned from his role at the company due to his plans to relocate to the Western Cape permanently.

Aspen is the largest pharmaceutical company in Africa and was founded in 1997 in Durban, South Africa, by its current CEO, Stephen Saad, and its chief advisor, Gus Attridge.

Aspen informed shareholders of Haman’s move through a SENS announcement released on Thursday, 30 April 2026.

The company explained that Haman, who has served as the company’s chief corporate officer since April 2021, will resign from his role effective 31 July 2026. He first joined Aspen in May 2020.

Aspen said Haman will step down from the board as an executive director on 1 May 2026, “due to his plans to relocate to the Western Cape permanently”.

Aspen is headquartered in La Lucia, Durban, with a sales, marketing and distribution centre in Johannesburg, and manufacturing sites in Cape Town, East London, and Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth).

“The board expresses its sincere appreciation to Mr Haman for his valuable contributions and dedicated service to Aspen during his tenure as an executive and as director,” the company said.

“His leadership has played a significant role in the success and development of the group.”

According to the group’s latest annual results, Haman leads Aspen’s enablement, shared services, and governance functions, including technology, people, and strategic business processes.

He is a member of the company’s social and ethics committee and is also an independent non-executive director of the Institute of Directors in Southern Africa and Sasria.

The group’s latest Integrated Report for the 2025 financial year showed that Haman received a total remuneration package of R12.99 million.

This package includes a base pay of R7.21 million, retirement and medical benefits worth R1.21 million, a performance bonus of R2.88 million, and a share-based payment of R1.68 million.

For the 2024 financial year, Haman received a total remuneration package of R11.85 million.

While Haman will step down in July 2026, Aspen said he has agreed that, following his resignation, he will remain available to the group on a consulting basis for 12 months.

“This arrangement is intended to ensure continuity and support a smooth transition, which will enable the group to continue to benefit from his expertise,” the company said. “The board wishes Mr Haman continued success in his future endeavours.”
