New shopping mall with a Pick n Pay, Shoprite, and a KFC to open in R5 billion smart city
Leratong City Shopping Centre is set to open on 29 October 2026 as the first part of the broader Leratong Smart City Development in Kagiso.
The 42,000 m² shopping mall will feature 89 retail tenants and is expected to stimulate housing development and commercial activity in the region.
Leratong Smart City Development is a partnership between the Gauteng Provincial Government, Mogale City Local Municipality, Trendville Investments, and McCormick Property Development.
This is part of the province’s efforts to address its housing backlog, with it moving away from sporadic projects dotted around major urban areas.
The new approach is to build integrated ‘cities’ that have bulk infrastructure in place and can provide commercial and industrial activity alongside housing.
These projects are so-called Mega Cities that are set to be self-sufficient and located along major transport corridors.
Leratong Smart City Development follows a similar model, with it set to have 15,000 housing units, a commercial precinct, and a private hospital alongside the mall.
“These proposed components form part of the longer-term vision to establish a mixed-use urban node that combines residential, commercial and essential services in one area,” Mogale City said.
Valued at R5 billion, the project is billed as transformational for the region and is expected to stimulate greater investment in the West Rand.
“My ambition is to see a single crane multiply across our CBD. I want to see more cranes rising above our city centre,” Mayor Lucky Sele said.
“I want to see old buildings renovated, underutilised properties redeveloped and new commercial spaces taking shape.”
The new shopping mall will also play a major role in creating employment in the region, with it creating 1,096 jobs during the construction phase.
It is expected that the city will support 2,500 permanent employment opportunities once it is fully developed.
However, this depends on the implementation of subsequent phases, which has been an issue for these ambitious projects.
The shopping mall has been developed by McCormick, which has a rich history of property development in under-serviced areas.
Family-owned, the company has built 88 retail developments across South Africa and has 4 under construction, with 11 in the pipeline.
Some of its famous developments include Alex Mall in Alexandra, Acornhoek Megacity in Bushbuckridge, and Kwagga Mall in Mpumalanga.
Mogale City said the mall will include Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Clicks, Sportscene, Mr Price, Panarottis, McDonald’s, KFC, Milky Lane and other stores.
