Denel seeks R30 billion boost, and major bank hit with $1.2 billion fine

The rand was trading at R16.46 against the US dollar on the morning of Wednesday, 14 October 2026, strengthening from the day before.

South African equities advanced yesterday despite a steep decline in mining output and heightened pressure on local manufacturing.

The JSE All Share Index rose 0.60%, while the Top 40 Index rose 0.59% even as mining production contracted 12.7% in August over a 3.7% forecast.

Meanwhile, Chinese exports to South Africa rose 29% during the first eight months of 2026, placing pressure on local manufacturers.

On Wall Street, markets ended lower due to continued semiconductor stock selling and mixed third-quarter results from major banks.

The Dow Jones led the declines at 0.35%, followed by the Nasdaq at 0.15% and the S&P 500 at 0.02%.

European indices eased slightly as well, with weak semiconductor shares weighing on sentiment even amid lower oil prices.

The STOXX 600 declined 0.1%, ending a two-session advance, while the FTSE fell 0.06%. The DAX and CAC 40 both eased 0.07%.

In Asia, equities edged higher as tech shares rebounded, supported by a 36.6% year-on-year surge in Chinese exports in September.

The Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite posted moderate gains of 0.30% and 0.10%, respectively, while the Nikkei 225 declined 1.82%.

In the commodities market, Brent crude oil traded at around $106 per barrel as Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia continue to heighten supply risks.

On Wednesday morning, the rand was trading at R16.46 to the US dollar, R18.45 to the euro, and R21.85 to the British pound.
