Inside South Africa’s most expensive gym which charges R4,350 per month

Located in the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District lies South Africa’s most expensive luxury gym, Virgin Active Silo District, which costs R4,350 per month.

This gym, also known as “The Fancy One”, forms part of Virgin Active’s five Collection Clubs in South Africa. The other Collection Clubs are located in Melrose Arch, Alice Lane, Menlyn Maine and Moses Mabhida.

With a Collection Membership, members can access Silo and all other Virgin Active gyms in South Africa as well as international locations in Thailand, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Italy.

Virgin Active’s Head of Member Experience, Jacqui Walter, told Daily Investor that its Collection Clubs are unlike any other gym.

“Virgin Active Collection Clubs represent our Premium Social Wellness offering – a collection of exceptional clubs designed for members seeking far more than a traditional gym,” she said.

These gyms still serve as places to exercise. However, unlike other gyms, Collection Clubs are designed to be third spaces for members.

“Not home or the office but spaces where fitness, recovery, productivity, connection and wellbeing come together to create a genuinely premium lifestyle experience.”

“Members don’t simply visit to work out; they come to exercise, recover, connect with others, work between meetings, enjoy great food and invest in their overall wellbeing.”

Walter noted that each Collection Club has its own unique identity, which has been inspired by its location and community.

However, they all share a common philosophy of delivering exceptional hospitality, premium facilities and curated wellness experiences.

While each Collection Club offers a high-end experience, Virgin Active Silo District stands out as the country’s most bespoke gym.

What Virgin Active Silo District offers

Walter explained that Virgin Active Silo District is one of South Africa’s leading examples of Premium Social Wellness.

“The club has been designed as an urban wellness destination where members can move seamlessly between fitness, recovery, work and social connection.”

The concept of wellness is at the core of Silo District’s design. For Virgin Active, this idea is about more than simply exercising.

“Silo District creates an environment where members can start their day with a workout, recover in the wellness spaces, meet friends for coffee, work remotely between meetings or simply take time to recharge.”

“It’s this combination of exceptional facilities, premium hospitality and community that differentiates Silo District from a traditional health club.”

With the club’s premium price tag also comes a number of special amenities, facilities and fitness classes. These include:

  • Premium strength and cardio training spaces.
  • World-recognised Group Exercise experiences, including Yoga, Reformer Pilates and Cycle.
  • Heated swimming pool.
  • Premium recovery facilities, including sauna, steam room, spa baths and dedicated wellness spaces.
  • Personal Training, Biokinetic services and other professional services.
  • Beautifully designed lounges and co-working spaces.
  • Access to premium food and beverage experiences through Nü.
  • A highly personalised member experience delivered by wellness professionals.

“Every element has been carefully designed to create an environment where members can move effortlessly between movement, recovery, productivity and connection,” Walter said.

The rise of bespoke gyms

According to Walter, Virgin Active has seen an increasing interest in bespoke gyms, such as Silo District, in South Africa.

“We’re seeing a clear shift towards what we describe as Premium Social Wellness. Today’s members are looking for much more than access to equipment.”

“They want beautifully designed spaces that support every aspect of their wellbeing, from exercise and recovery through to social connection and work-life balance.”

She said modern gyms have become lifestyle destinations where members can spend several hours rather than simply completing a workout.

“Recovery spaces, boutique class experiences, premium hospitality and thoughtfully designed communal areas have become increasingly important in the overall member experience.”

“We believe this reflects a broader global trend where wellness has become an integral part of everyday life rather than something people do a few times a week.”

Virgin Active believes that the future of wellness is connected to how people live, work and connect, Walter explained.

“Premium Social Wellness is about creating spaces where members don’t simply exercise, they belong. And our clubs are intentionally designed for members to move freely throughout the space when making use of it.”

As such, the brand’s Collection Clubs have been designed to support healthier, happier and more connected lives for its members.

It caters to all members, whether they are training for an event, recovering after a busy day, working between meetings, enjoying a coffee with friends or participating in one of their fitness communities.

“Silo District is a great example of this philosophy brought to life. A beautiful destination where world-class fitness meets exceptional hospitality, meaningful social connection and premium wellness experiences.”
