Capitec changes its name

South Africa’s largest bank by customers has officially changed its name from Capitec Bank Holdings to Capitec Limited.

The resolution for this name change was approved by shareholders at the bank’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, 31 July 2026.

It has been filed with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission, and Capitec has received confirmation of its registration from the regulator.

This means the name change has been approved and brought into effect, with the company now officially recognised as Capitec Limited.

In the results of its AGM, published on Monday, 3 August, Capitec explained the reasoning behind its name change.

Capitec’s board believes that the proposed new name is strategically better aligned with the group’s evolution into a diversified financial services provider.

Over the past few years, Capitec has taken decisive steps into services and products other than banking, which has paid off well for the company.

Capitec’s insurance business has performed particularly well, with the company reporting at its AGM that net insurance income grew by 38% to R5.2 billion in its 2026 financial year.

Capitec Connect, the company’s telecoms offering, has grown to 1.5 million active clients since its launch in 2022.

The company’s fintech business, which includes Capitec Connect and value-added services, grew its headline earnings by 18% to R6.1 billion in FY2026.

With Capitec’s increasingly diversified business offerings, the company is looking to portray itself as more than a traditional bank, thus the name change.

In its AGM results, Capitec said the name change will not affect its JSE share code, which will remain ‘CPI’. It will also remain listed on the JSE’s Main Board in the Banks sector of the Financials industry.

The salient dates for Capitec shareholders related to its name change are shown in the table below.
