Big changes to FNB ATMs in South Africa

International cardholders in South Africa can now view withdrawal amounts at FNB ATMs in their home currency before completing a transaction.

This move, which was made in partnership with Irish fintech company Fexco, will build on a service already available on FNB Speedpoint devices.

On Tuesday, 4 August, FNB announced that it has extended currency choice to ATM withdrawals for international travellers in South Africa.

The service has been available to international cardholders when paying at shops, restaurants, and other businesses in South Africa on FNB’s Speedpoint devices.

It is now available for cash withdrawals at FNB ATMs across South Africa. FNB’s ATM network spans 4,775 machines across the country.

“Customers will now be able to view ATM withdrawal amounts in their home currency before completing a transaction,” FNB announced.

Customers can then choose whether to transact in their home currency or South African rand.

FNB said this Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) will provide greater transparency and choice when accessing cash while travelling.

FNB Merchant Service CEO John Mlangeni explained that international visitors want convenient access to cash and greater certainty when managing their money while travelling. 

“This enhancement helps customers better understand the value of a transaction before making a decision, while benefiting from the scale and accessibility of FNB’s network,” Mlangeni said.

“By extending a service already available through everyday purchases to our ATM network, we are creating a more consistent experience for customers.”

The service’s rollout has already been completed across FNB’s ATM network and builds on a longstanding partnership between the banking giant and Fexco.

Fexco, founded in 1981, is an Irish financial technology and business services company that specialises in foreign exchange, payments, and DCC.

Fexco Financial Services CEO Sean Crowe said the company is pleased to extend its longstanding relationship with FNB through this rollout. 

“By bringing this capability to FNB’s ATM network, we are helping to create a more consistent experience for international cardholders travelling throughout South Africa,” he said.

FNB said the service will be available across thousands of locations nationwide, making it easier for international visitors to access cash while travelling in South Africa.
