How Discovery Bank is reinventing the everyday payment
For most people, making a payment still means the same familiar ritual: open the banking app, tap through menus, copy an account number, retype a reference, pause on the confirmation screen, and hope the details are correct.
Discovery Bank believes that ritual is about to end.
The bank has introduced agentic payments through Discovery AI, a new capability that allows clients to make a payment simply by describing what they want to do, in the way they would naturally say it out loud.
“Pay the rent for July.”
“Send Sarah R500 for dinner.”
“Please settle this invoice.”
“Purchase 3GB MTN mobile data.”
Behind the scenes, Discovery AI interprets the intent, extracts the payment details, prepares the transaction, and walks the client through confirmation in a single, flowing conversation. Clients can even upload or photograph an invoice and let the system prepare the payment for them.
With Discovery AI, payments become simpler, faster and more intuitive – while clients stay fully in control by reviewing and approving every payment before it’s processed. It is one of the first conversational payment experiences of its kind in banking, and it signals a much larger shift in what a bank is expected to be.
From assistants that answer, to agents that act
For the past two years, most banks around the world have been experimenting with generative AI to summarise documents, answer client questions and speed up admin. The next phase, referred to across the industry as agentic AI, is fundamentally different. It moves AI from talking about tasks to actually completing them.
Global consultancy Accenture describes 2026 as the year agentic AI will move beyond pilots and begin transforming financial services at scale, with 57% of business leaders expecting agentic commerce to become mainstream within three years.
McKinsey is even more direct, arguing that agentic AI systems “don’t just assist bankers; they act autonomously, execute multistep processes, and increasingly inherit the same access rights as the humans they work alongside.”
International banks are already investing heavily in that direction. JPMorgan Chase, the world’s largest bank by assets, is building what its leadership calls “a fully AI-connected enterprise,” with more than 450 agentic AI use cases in production and plans to deploy longer-running AI agents that can operate autonomously for hours at a time.
Against this backdrop, Discovery Bank’s agentic payments represents South Africa stepping confidently into the same global conversation, and doing so with a use case that clients can feel in their everyday lives.
A quieter kind of innovation, and a more human one
What is striking about agentic payments is not the sophistication of the technology, but the simplicity of the experience.
Hylton Kallner, CEO of Discovery Bank, believes this simplicity is precisely the point.
“For decades, banking has asked people to think like the system. Enter the account number here. Add the reference there. Choose the correct beneficiary from a list. Agentic payments turn that relationship around. The client speaks in the language of their life, and the bank responds in the language of action.”
Kallner argues that this represents a deeper shift in how banks should think about digital experience.
“The next generation of banking will not be judged by how many features sit inside an app, but by how effortlessly the bank understands what its clients actually want to do. Intelligence, not interface, becomes the differentiator. Our ambition with Discovery AI is to build a bank that meets people where they are, in their own words, on their own terms, and quietly does the work for them.”
What Discovery Bank clients can now do
Through Discovery AI, clients can:
- Get help answering questions, retrieve documents, get personalised insights and manage their finances – backed by 24/7 human support when needed.
- Make payments and purchases using natural language prompts.
- Upload or photograph invoices for intelligent payment preparation.
- Review and confirm payment details within the conversation.
- Complete transactions without navigating traditional banking menus or forms.
The capability sits inside Discovery AI, the bank’s expanding AI-powered ecosystem for servicing and digital banking.
A signal of where banking is heading
Global research suggests that consumer and business expectations are shifting faster than most banks are prepared for.
The 2026 Global AI in Financial Services Report, published by the University of Cambridge, describes agentic AI as “rapidly becoming a central, structural component of the global financial ecosystem” and warns that the pace of change now risks outstripping traditional banking models.
Microsoft’s global banking practice adds that agentic experiences allow banks to move from reactive interactions to genuinely goal-oriented ones, “understanding intent, maintaining memory, taking initiative, and orchestrating tasks across systems.”
Discovery Bank’s approach sits comfortably inside that global direction of travel, but with a distinctly South African emphasis on making sophisticated technology feel effortless in the hands of the everyday client.
“Agentic payments is not a feature enhancement,” Kallner concludes. “It is a redefinition of the interaction model between people and their bank. We believe the banks that thrive in the years ahead will be those that use intelligence to remove friction from life, not add to it. This is a meaningful first step in that direction, and there is a great deal more to come.”
